Quill is a mirror.. the version of you that bleeds.
A dark-romantic storyteller building an entire world out of her wounds.

Her songs blur confession and confrontation, pulling listeners into a cinematic blend of alt-rock and emotional poetry.

Born from survival, Quill writes like she’s documenting evidence. Each lyric unravels the self she built to be loved, the rage she swallowed to stay safe, and the longing that refuses to die quietly.

With a distinctive voice, expressive musicianship, and a focus on honest, emotionally driven songwriting, James creates music that feels both intimate and expansive, drawing from a wide range of musical influences while maintaining a sound distinctly her own.

After studying Commercial Songwriting at Middle Tennessee State University, James has spent the past several years developing her career as both a recording artist and touring musician. Her work has taken her across the Southeast, Northeast, and Midwest, as well as through some of the country’s most influential music communities, including Nashville, New Orleans, Muscle Shoals, Los Angeles, and Provincetown, Massachusetts. Each of these places has contributed to her evolving musical perspective and deepened her connection to the songwriting and performance traditions that shape her work.

James returns to Provincetown each summer to perform in the historic coastal artists’ community, continuing a longstanding tradition of musicians, writers, and performers making the town part of their creative lives. Along the way, she has shared the stage with artists including Lunar Vacation, The Secret Sisters, and Penelope Road.

Beyond her solo career, James is a member of Young Original, a Nashville-based four-part vocal ensemble that brings a contemporary perspective to the Great American Songbook. Combining jazz, pop, and intricate vocal harmony, the group has toured nationally, performing fresh arrangements of classic songs for audiences across the country. As a solo artist, James began releasing music independently in 2024 before releasing her debut EP in April 2025. Since then, she has continued expanding her catalog and exploring the space between folk, R&B, soul, and acoustic music. Her upcoming projects include new original material and a studio EP recorded in Los Angeles, marking another step forward in an evolving body of work rooted in storytelling, musicianship, and a genuine love of song.

Whether performing as a solo artist or as part of an ensemble, Josie James brings a thoughtful, versatile, and deeply musical presence to every stage.
